My Story
In January 2020 my cousin bought a ticket to "Mrs. Doubtfire" at the Fifth Avenue in Seattle. It was a sold out show and they accidentally gave her two tickets. Curious if the second ticket was any good I went along and bluffed my way into a great seat at the completely sold out show. During intermission my cousin and I were swooning over the costumes in the show. I told her I briefly studied costume design in college, but abandoned the endeavor for "safe see: boring" business school. I then wistfully remarked, "But it's too late for me now." "Kerin, no it's not." Was her reply. Ever the contrarian I set out to prove her wrong by quitting my job as a high powered sales executive to take the rigorous Apparel Design and Development program at Seattle Central College where I learned about pattern drafting, sewing and surface design. I'm still not a costume designer, but my obsession with art, housewares, stationery and fashion has found a outlet beyond full closets and drawers. I am now a surface designer.
In addition to impulsively quitting my job to study sewing I have a degree in business from Western Washington University, a certificate in "art and the creative process" from University of California San Diego and a certificate in Digital Arts also from Seattle Central College.
